The Flight 93 National Memorial will soon take its place alongside other U.S. sites of honor such as Gettysburg and Pearl Harbor. What began as an ordinary Tuesday morning on September 11, 2001 ended as a tragic day for our nation. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, the attack on the U.S Capitol was thwarted. These heroes lost their lives in a common field in Pennsylvania while saving the lives of countless others.

In 2002 Congress authorized the development of the Flight 93 National Memorial. An international competition was conducted to choose the design firm, and the work of Paul Murdoch Architects was selected. Phase 1 of the construction is well underway and is on schedule to be completed in time for the 10th Anniversary Dedication to be held September 10-11, 2011.

Waupaca Sand & Solutions’ sister company, SportZmix Soilblending, is proud to be a part of this project.  SportZmix created the custom soil media being used for the plantings at the memorial site. Nearly 20,000 cubic yards of various soil mixes were manufactured specific to the species of shrubs, trees and groves that are being planted.

Through the dedication of our team and onsite Project Manager Bill Larson, and the partnership of Arrow/Wallace Pancher led by Senior Project Manager Todd Phillips, we paid tribute to the heroes of Flight 93. We feel blessed to help create a place of honor and commemoration that is both solemn and powerfully uplifting, for the Flight 93 passengers, crew members, their families, and all Americans.
